How to Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Windows Mail

Sure, you could use Windows Live Mail to access your Windows Live Hotmail account outside the browser, or maybe Outlook.

But Outlook is big, and Windows Live Mail seems a bit confused. No, Windows Mail be your program.

Unfortunately, your program just throws a brief error at you when you try to access Windows Live Hotmail. fortunately, a little tool called FreePOPs can help.

Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in Windows Mail

To set up a free Windows Live Hotmail account in Windows Mail:

  • Install FreePOPs and make sure it is running.
  • Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu in Windows Mail.
  • Click Add....
  • Make sure E-mail Account is highlighted.
  • Click Next.
  • Type your name under Display name:.
  • Click Next.
  • Type your Windows Live Hotmail address excluding the final ".com" under E-mail address:.
    • If your Windows Live Hotmail address is "samsample@hotmail.com", for example, enter "samsample@hotmail".
  • Click Next.
  • Make sure POP3 is selected under Incoming e-mail server type:.
  • Type "localhost" (excluding the quotation marks) under Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server:
  • Enter your ISP's mail server under Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name:.
    • Typically, you'll use the same server you use for your other non-Windows Live Hotmail email account.
  • Click Next.
  • Enter your full Windows Live Hotmail address under E-mail username:.
  • Type your Windows Live Hotmail password under Password:.
  • Click Next.
  • Make sure Do not download my e-mail at this time is checked.
  • Click Finish.
  • Now make sure the new account (probably named "localhost") is highlighted.
  • Click Properties.
  • Go to the General tab.
  • Append ".com" to your Windows Live Hotmail address under E-mail address: to complete it.
  • Go to the Advanced tab.
  • Enter "2000" in the Incoming mail (POP3): field, replacing the default "110" that has been pre-entered.
  • Click OK.
  • Now click Close.

By but changing your user name, you can download from other Windows Live Hotmail folders than your Inbox, too.
