How to Make Windows Live Hotmail Accept Mail Only From Known Senders

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

It's the Windows Live Hotmail account you use only with your best friends. You know who these friends are, and Windows Live Hotmail knows their email addresses, which, to boot, are not likely to change.

So why do you have to wade through all the spam Windows Live Hotmail's junk mail filters miss to get to see the friendly mail from your Ivorian friend? With a small configuration tweak, you don't: all mail not from people in your address book or safe senders list goes straight to the Junk folder.

To have Windows Live Hotmail allow only mail from people you know through to your Inbox:

  • Select Options | More options... from the Windows Live Hotmail toolbar (or just Options in Windows Live Hotmail classic).
  • Follow the Filters and reporting link under Junk e-mail.
  • Make sure Exclusive is selected under Choose a junk e-mail filter.
  • Click Save.

Make sure you add all your important senders to your Windows Live Hotmail address book or safe senders list.
