How to Disable Inline Display of Image Attachments in Outlook Express

By , About.com Guide

An attachment is an attachment is an attachment.

Unless, of course, Outlook Express decides it should be part of the email text proper. If Outlook Express shows you images and pictures attached to incoming emails (preferrably the large ones) inline in the message body while you'd rather only have them appear as handy icons, a little tweak in the Windows registry can help.

Disable Inline Display of Image Attachments in Outlook Express

To prevent Outlook Express from showing image attachment previews inside the message body:

  • Close Outlook Express if it is running.
  • Press Windows-R.
  • Type "regedit" (excluding the quotation marks).
  • Click OK.
  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{random, long ID string}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0.
  • Select Edit | New | DWord from the menu.
  • Type "Automatically Inline Images" (not including the quotation marks).
  • Press Enter.
  • Make sure the Data column of Automatically Inline Images says 0x00000000 (0).
    • If it does not, double click Automatically Inline Images,
    • type "0" (again excluding the quotation marks) under Value data: and
    • click OK.
  • Close Registry Editor.
  • Start Outlook Express.
