How to Avoid Privacy and Security Issues with Emails in Opera

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Emails that work like pages on the web and display images, flash animations or play movies are certainly nice, but they're not without problems: whenever you open such a message, all the multimedia stuff is downloaded from remote servers, creating a security and privacy risk.

To avoid these dangers, you can stop opening emails. Fortunately, Opera provides a more conservative way. It will open the messages and display their contents, but not download anything from the web.

Avoid Privacy and Security Issues with Emails in Opera

To avoid privacy and security issues with remote data in emails in Opera:

  • Select View | Display from the mail toolbar.
  • Make sure Suppress external embeds is selected.
    • If Suppress external embeds is already checked, leave the menu without making any changes.
    • If Suppress external embeds is not checked, click on it.

Using the same toolbar button menu, you can re-enable remote content, but you can also set up a fast keyboard shortcut to toggle this setting.
