With a powerful desktop email program at your finger's tip and a browser on every mobile device, you can have it almost all. On the computer, Mac OS X Mail is an elegant and versatile interface to your AIM Mail account, and you can still access that account in a browser, of course.
Using IMAP for AIM Mail account in Mac OS X Mail even gives you full access to all your folders.
Access AIM Mail in Mac OS X Mail
To set up AIM Mail in Mac OS X Mail using IMAP (with access to all your online folders):
- Select Mail | Preferences… from the menu in Mac OS X Mail.
- Go to the Accounts tab.
- Click the + button below the accounts list.
- Type your name under Full Name:.
- Enter your AIM Mail email address (e.g. "example@aim.com" — not including the quotation marks) under Email Address:.
- Now type your AIM Mail password under Password:.
- Click Continue.
- If you're asked to continue without a secure password, click Continue.
- Click Create.
- Highlight the newly created AOL account under Accounts.
- Close the Accounts configuration window.
- Click Save when asked Save changes to the "AOL" IMAP account?.
- Open the Sent folder of the newly created "AIM.COM" account.
- Select Mailbox | Use This Mailbox For | Sent from the menu.
- Open the Trash folder of the "AIM.COM" account.
- Select Mailbox | Use This Mailbox For | Trash from the menu.
Access AIM Mail in Mac OS X Mail As a POP Account
To add an AIM Mail account to Mac OS X Mail using POP (which lets you download new messages and send mail in a straight-forward manner):
- Select Mail | Preferences… from the menu.
- Go to the Accounts tab.
- Click the + button under the accounts list.
- Enter your name under Full Name:.
- Type your full AIM Mail email address (e.g. "example@aim.com") in the Email Address: field.
- Type your AIM Mail password under Password:.
- Click Continue.
- Click Setup Manually.
- Make sure POP is selected under Account Type:.
- Type "AIM Mail" under Description.
- Enter "pop.aim.com" under Incoming Mail Server:.
- Click Continue.
- Click Continue again to continue without a secure password.
- Type "AIM Mail" under Description for the Outgoing Mail Server.
- Verify smtp.aim.com is entered under Outgoing Mail Server:, Use Authentication is checked and your user name and password have been entered.
- Click Continue.
- Once again, click Continue to continue without a secure password.
- Now click Create.
- Highlight the newly created AIM Mail account under Accounts.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Enter "110" under Port:.
- Optionally:
- Pick the desired setting under Remove copy from server after retrieving a message:.
- You can keep all mail on the AIM Mail server. If you let Mac OS X Mail delete messages at all, they will not be available in AIM Mail on the web or for download on other computers (or via IMAP).
- Close the Accounts configuration window.
- Click Save.
