Guide Review - Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X 1.0 - Gmail Mail Checker
Checking your Gmail account at a desired interval, Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X announces the number of new messages in its Dock icon and optionally plays a chime. In the icon context menu, Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X dutifully lists the senders and subjects of the newly arrived emails.
Selecting a message from the menu yields the first pleasant surprise: it actually opens in your default browser, ready to be read (and ready for further treatment, of course). The second surprise is even better hidden. If you make Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X the default OS X email handler (you have to do that in Mail's preferences), clicking on an email link on a web page will conveniently open a new message in Gmail.
Unfortunately, and maybe a bit surprisingly too, Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X can only look for unread messages in the Gmail Inbox. You cannot check (only) additional labels with it. While Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X can speak text upon new mail (including the sender's name even), it does not currently make use of Growl for classy visual alerts.
