How to Block a Sender in Windows Live Mail or Outlook Express

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Many emails are sent every day. Some of them are not welcome. If you find many of these unwanted messages are from the same sender, you can block all mail from that sender easily in Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail or Outlook Express.

Block a Sender in Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail

To add a sender to your list of blocked senders in Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail:

  • Open a message from the undesired sender or highlight it in the message list.
  • Select Actions | Junk e-mail | add sender to blocked senders list (Windows Live Mail) or Message | Junk E-mail | Add Sender to Blocked Senders List (Windows Mail) from the menu.
    • Select Actions | Junk e-mail | Add sender's domain to blocked senders list (or Message | Junk E-mail | Add Sender's Domain to Blocked Senders List) from the menu to block messages not only from this sender but from all addresses at the same domain (what follows the '@' sign).
    • In Windows Live Mail, you may have to hold down the Alt key to see the menu.

Block a Sender in Outlook Express

To add an email address to the list of blocked senders in Outlook Express:

  • Highlight a message from the person you want to block.
  • Select Message | Block Sender... from the menu.
  • Click Yes to have all existing messages from the blocked sender deleted from the current folder.
    • Future messages are blocked even if you answer No to the question and keep existing messages.

Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail and Outlook Express automatically add the sender's address to your list of blocked senders. Note that this only works with POP accounts, though. Messages from blocked senders in IMAP or MSN Hotmail accounts will not be move to the Trash folder automatically.

Blocking is Not For (Against) Junk Mail

Send spammers can pick a new, different email address for every junk email they send, blocking by sender address is not effective against this annoying type of email. To ban spam, try a spam filter.

Blocking Entire Domains in Outlook Express

In addition to individual senders, you can also block whole domains in Outlook Express. And of course it is possible to remove a sender (or domain) from the list of blocked senders.
