What the Question Marks Mean in Hotmail and How to Remove Them

By , About.com Guide

If you open your Hotmail Inbox, you can see a multitude of icons. There are envelope icons for both read (white) and unread (yellow) messages, there is the occasional butterfly icon signifying mail from Hotmail in between, and there are messages that appear unread and are marked with a big red question mark.

Is it that Hotmail does not know what to think about these message or are these question marks there to tell you something? Either way, you do not or would not know.

Fortunately, the Hotmail question mark mystery can be explained. As it is the case with MSN and Hotmail communication, the envelope icon tells you something about the sender.

Note: This tip is for MSN Hotmail, which is no longer available.

What the Question Marks Mean in Hotmail and How to Remove Them

Hotmail displays an envelope icon with a question mark for

  • messages from senders not in your Hotmail address book.

To remove the question mark from a message (and all future messages from the same sender), add the sender to your Hotmail contacts:

  • Open the message.
  • Click the Save Address button in the toolbar.
  • Click OK.
