How to Protect Your Privacy in FastMail

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Images in emails are a wonderful thing to have. They make so many newsletters so much more colorful, lively and readable.

Unfortunately, remote images in email messages also come with a privacy risk: the sender knows when you have opened the message. This is not much of a problem with senders you trust, but you do not want spammers and snoopers to know when (or that) you opened a message.

It is best not to download remote images by default. In FastMail, settings this up is easy.

Protect Your Privacy in FastMail

To avoid downloading all remote images automatically in FastMail:

  • Select Options from the top FastMail navigation bar.
  • Follow the Account Preferences link.
  • Make sure Disable images is selected under Web Bug Protection.
  • Click Save.
