How to Forward Outlook.com Email to Another Email Address

You'll happily receive email at your Outlook.com address — as long as you can read it at a different email account? You'd like to keep a backup of he mail you get — and would love for it to be fed automatically? You would be helped tremendously of certain emails sent to your Outlook.com address would show up in your work email account just about instantly?

Outlook.com can forward incoming messages to another email address (at Outlook.com, of course, or elsewhere) automatically. You can set it up to pass along all emails or, using message rules, only those matching certain criteria — say, coming from a particular sender or being addressed to a particular Outlook.com alias.

Forward Outlook.com Email to Another Email Address

To set up Outlook.com to forward incoming messages to a different email address automatically:

  • Click the settings gear in the Outlook.com toolbar.
  • Choose More mail settings from the menu.
  • Follow the Email forwarding link under Managing your account.
  • Make sure Forward your mail to another email account is selected under Email forwarding.
    • Select Don't forward to halt forwarding.
  • Enter the email address to which you want all mail coming to your Outlook.com account forwarded automatically under Where do you want your messages to be sent?.
    • If you cannot add another email address:
      • You can click Remove for an existing forwarding address to replace it.
  • If you want to retain copies of forwarded mail at Outlook.com:
    • Make sure Keep a copy of forwarded messages in your Outlook inbox. is checked.
    • With Keep a copy of forwarded messages in your Outlook inbox. not checked, forwarded mail will not be available in Outlook.com at all (not in the Deleted folder either).
  • Click Save.

Forward Certain Messages Using a Rule in Outlook.com

To set up a new filter that forwards certain messages to a different email address from Outlook.com automatically:

  • Click the settings gear in the Outlook.com toolbar.
  • Select More mail settings from the menu that appears.
  • Now select Rules for sorting new messages under Customizing Outlook.
  • Click New.
  • Specify the desired criterion for matching emails for forwarding under Step 1: Which messages do you want this rule to apply to?.
    • To forward all messages from "sender@example.com", for instance, make sure the criterion reads Sender's address contains "sender@example.com".
  • Make sure Forward to is picked under Step 2: What action do you want to apply?.
  • Enter the address to which new messages matching the rule should be sent automatically under Forward to.
  • Click Save.
    • Outlook.com will keep a copy of emails forwarded by a rule in the Outlook.com inbox.
