How to Configure Windows Mail or Outlook Express to Work with POPFile

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Windows Mail and Outlook Express are nice email programs, but they lacks superior spam protection.

POPFile is a fabulous anti-spam tool, but not an email program.

Put them together, and the combination is hard to beat (by spammers, at least). Here's how to use POPFile's great spam protection with Windows Mail or Outlook Express.

Configure Windows Mail or Outlook Express to Work with POPFile

To set up Windows Mail or Outlook Express to receive incoming mail through POPFile:

  • Select Tools | Accounts from the menu.
  • In Outlook Express, go to the Mail tab.
  • Highlight your email account.
  • Click Properties.
  • Go to the Servers tab.
  • Double-click in the Incoming mail (POP3): field so that its content is highlighted.
  • Hit Ctrl-C.
  • Change Incoming mail (POP3): to "127.0.0.1".
  • Click in the Account name: field.
  • Hit the Home key.
  • Press Ctrl-V.
  • Enter :.
    • The Account name: field should now contain your original Incoming mail (POP3): server, then a colon, and finally your user name.
    • For example, the field could read "mail.ladedu.com:ladedu" if your original incoming mail server is "mail.ladedu.com" and your user name is "ladedu".
  • Click OK.
  • Finally, click Close.
