How to Add a Member to a Mailing List in Windows Mail or Outlook Express

By , About.com Guide

I like things clean and organized. Of course (and unfortunately), this does not mean that everything around me is cleanly organized. But I like it that way, and I appreciate all help I can get — help like Windows Mail and Outlook Express provide it with the mailing lists I have created.

It's easy to add address book members to a mailing list in Outlook Express, but adding recipients to a mailing list without having them appear in the address book, too, is a simple thing to do, too. And it helps me keep address book and mailing lists neatly separated.

Add a Member to a Mailing List in Windows Mail

To add a new address to a distribution list you've set up in Windows Mail:

  • Select Tools | Windows Contacts... from the Windows Mail menu.
  • Double-click the mailing list to which you want to add subscribers.
  • Type the email address of the new recipient in the E-mail: entry field at the bottom of the dialog.
    • Optionally, add a name to the subscribed email address as well under Contact Name:.
  • Click Create for Group Only.
  • Finally, click OK and close the address book.

To add multiple addresses, repeat steps 3 and 4.

Add a Member to a Mailing List in Outlook Express

To add a new member to a mailing list you have set up in Outlook Express:

  • Select Tools | Address Book... from the Outlook Express menu.
  • Highlight the mailing list you want to add subscribers to in the list of address book entries.
  • Click Properties.
  • Type the email address of the new recipient in the E-mail: entry field at the bottom of the dialog.
    • Optionally, add a name to the subscribed email address as well.
  • Click Add.
  • Finally, click OK and close the address book.

To add multiple addresses, repeat steps 4 and 5.
