How to Change the Columns Shown in Windows Mail or Outlook Express

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

An email's subject is essential information and should be displayed in Windows Mail and Outlook Express's mailbox overview. I think we can agree on that.

Outlook Express does, too, and the Subject is one of the columns shown by default. The recipient, for example, is not. To display it, you have to change the Windows Mail or Outlook Express columns layout.

Change the Columns Shown in Windows Mail or Outlook Express

To set the columns shown in the Outlook Express mailbox view:

  • Select View | Columns... from the menu in Windows Mail or Outlook Express.
  • Make sure the columns you want to be visible are checked.
  • Click OK.

Note that Windows Mail and Outlook Express use two different column profiles. One is used for Sent Items, Drafts and Outbox and the other for Inbox, Deleted Items and all folders you create (even if they are sub-folders of Sent Items, for example). Changing the column layout of one folder automatically changes the layout of all other folders in the same profile.
