How to Create a Business Card (vCard) in Windows Mail or Outlook Express

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Although "Business Card", the term used in Windows Mail and Outlook Express, seems to suggest it, a vCard is not just for business.

The Usefulness of a vCard

A vCard is a generally useful thing containing contact and directory information that anybody can import in their address book easily. If you send a vCard with your emails in Windows Mail or Outlook Express, the recipient can simply add this vCard to their address book and instantly has access to all your email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, your birthday (depending on how much of all that information you are willing to give away).

Creating a vCard for yourself in Outlook Express isn't exactly straight forward, but it works.

Create a Business Card (vCard) in Windows Mail

To make a business card for yourself in Windows Mail:

  • Select Tools | Windows Contacts... from the menu in Windows Mail.
  • Click New Contact.
  • Enter all the information you want included with your vCard.
  • Click OK

Create a Business Card (vCard) in Outlook Express

Creating a vCard in Outlook Express amounts to creating an address book entry. So to create a vCard for yourself, you need to add an address book entry for yourself in Outlook Express:

  • Select Tools | Address Book from the menu in Outlook Express.
  • Click on New | New Contact.
  • Enter all the information you want included with your vCard.
  • Click OK

That's it, you have just created a vCard for yourself in Outlook Express.

Include Your vCard with Every Message

Now make sure the card is attached to outgoing emails you compose in Windows Mail or Outlook Express.
