How to Forward Emails as Attachments Intelligently

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

If your email client provides the option to forward emails not inline, but as an attachment, use it!

Why Forward Emails as Attachments?

Forwarding email messages as attachments is a clean way of sharing them. The recipient can open the original message intact, won't have to wrestle with '>' or other misplaced characters, and can reply to the original sender easily.

Forward Emails as Attachments Intelligently

There are at least two points you should be aware of when forwarding messages as attachments, though:

  • The full message will be forwarded. This includes all headers with, most sensitively, all the recipient's email addresses. (There's a somewhat roundabout, but feasible, way to avoid this revelation of addresses.)
  • If you forward a message that itself came forwarded to you as an attachment, forward only the original message. Otherwise, the final recipient will have to click a lot until they get through to the "real" message.
