How to Color Quoted Text in Mac OS X Mail

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com Guide

In replies to email messages, the original text is usually quoted for reference. The quoted text is usually indented with "> " characters to distinguish it from the new content. Mac OS X Mail can add another visual clue that helps you spot the new text instantly: it can assign colors to quoted text.

Color Quoted Text in Mac OS X Mail

To make Mac OS X Mail colorize quoted text:

  • Select Mail | Preferences... from the menu in Mac OS X Mail.
  • Go to the Fonts & Colors tab.
  • Make sure Color quoted text is checked.
  • Specify a color for each of the three quotation levels
    • You can, of course, use the same color for all of them.
  • Close the preferences dialog.
