Use Advanced Combined Searches in Mac OS X Mail

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Mac OS X Mail lets you perform pretty clever searches pretty fast. If you still don't get exactly to the messages you're looking for, Mac OS X Mail has another powerful tool in store: parentheses.

To use advanced combined searches in Mac OS X Mail:

  • Combine search terms and the commands "and", "or" and "not" with parentheses to form complex search expressions.

For example, "spam and (heinz or guide not cats)" will find all messages that contain both "spam" and "heinz" (but not "cats"), both "spam" and "guide" (but not "cats") or both "spam", "heinz" and "guide", but not "cats".
