Serial Mail takes the smart, logical step to combine them to form a — capable — bulk email application. All you have to do is create a message template in Mail, save it and call Serial Mail to pick it up.
Serial Mail lets you select an address book group and then merges not only email address and recipient name, but also a great number of address book fields.
While you can even use custom fields and specify default values, the whole merging business is not particularly comfortable. There's also no advanced text processing (conditional text or scripting) and Serial Mail can't write updated values back to the Address Book.
Still, Serial Mail is a clever and flexible way to deliver personalized messages to (not too large) groups of people.
