Know What Compacting Mailboxes Means in Eudora

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Eudora stores your messages in text files. There is one file for every mailbox.

When you delete a message or move it to a different mailbox, the message itself is not immediately erased from the text file but only marked as deleted. This speeds up moving or deleting messages a lot.

When Eudora compacts a mailbox (either

  • automatically or
  • initiated by you as you select Special | Compact Mailboxes from the menu),

the messages marked as deleted are actually erased from the text file and the disk space such wasted is reclaimed.
