As friendly as AOL's main email client is, as powerful as AOL Communicator may be, both can't match the flexibility of using the email client you prefer.eMail2Pop makes this access a relative snap and comes with an additional bonus: really useful and effective spam filtering apparently based on SpamAssassin and making good use of its Bayesian junk mail classifier.
Unfortunately, the spam checks can take a bit of time and aren't particularly resource friendly overall. At the same time, a feature dubbed "Intelligent Sessions" prevents eMail2Pop from having to log in to your AOL account anew every time and can announce new messages automatically. Of course, you can also send mail through eMail2Pop, which even supports AOL return receipts.
Security-wise, eMail2Pop lets you restrict access by IP address or screen name, and it supports RSA SecureID authentication (interesting for Time Warner employees in particular). While accessing AOL Inboxes works great, you can't reach your junk mail folder with eMail2Pop, and a full-blown IMAP interface to AOL's online email storage would be even better.
