Edward Warren was 13 when the first hot-air balloon took off American soil — with Edward, its sole passenger.
After the Montgolfier brothers had demonstrated ballooning in 1784, spectacular ascents followed around Europe and North America. Peter Carnes, an attorney and innkeeper in Baltimore, was one of those experimenting with the flying balls. Finally, he built one large enough to carry a human. A human, but maybe not a heavier human. So teenager Edward Warren became the first American balloonist 224 years ago today.
A newspaper article congratulated Warren upon the flight and praised the "steady Fortitude of an old Voyager" with which he conducted it. Now, a balloon flight is but one occasions worthy of congratulatory notes, of course. I'm sure you can think of reasons to congratulate all your friends today — and yourself, too:
