It is worse than getting buried in an avalancheSeptember 06, 2011 By maggiesbuns
I use Gmail for business. It is famous for burying text in places that are impossible to search out. I have had Emails I know I sent at a specific time and date and cannot find them. I was warned about this when I signed up but had no idea the impact it would have on my everyday business. I would rather pay for a service than deal with such a bad provider. I plan to change as soon as my busy season ends. Good riddance Gmail.

It used to be greatJune 18, 2011 By heavens2mergatroid
When I started using Gmail, it was great. Their spam blocker is the best. What changed? The STUPID requirement of linking accounts with YouTube/Yahoo. I want to keep my email the way I want it. I DO NOT want my personal gmail account linked. Tried creating different account and linking that way. Nope. I have one account linked to YouTube. What happens? I look and I'm still linked and signed into my Gmail with another account. This is the worse idea since velvet pictures of Elvis! So I'm on the hunt for another email account. I know nothing is private on the 'Net...it just irks me that the one account I use for my 'personal' use is signed in without my consent.

Google is resting on it's laurels and slipping down the slope of arrogance. They've created a new web mail site which is broken, won't load, and instead of fixing it they tell everyone you have to turn off virus checking, turn off all browser plugins, use the absolute latest version of browser, only use broadband... and they're ""graciously"" keeping the old site that worked online to give the world time to convert all computers and browsers over to their specifications. I used paid gmail for several years, but this new web mail along with the crippled search capability is sending me elsewhere. Oh, and they decide what filenames my attachments are allowed to have. This is the paid service I'm talking about.

Google's mostly good vibe and a plethora of toolsMay 19, 2011 By Mockup
I have used GMAIL for years. Is anything perfect in this world? Try....is anything perfect in this world when it's free? I applaud Google for their free GMAIL service. Reliable. I have never lost a message. Here are what's good: 1) Online web front end has fast refresh 2) Excellent search message function 3) Custom folders 4) Email filtering by many criteria 5) A plethora of tools (see the ""Labs"" feature) with new ones you can try. No other online email service has anything like the Labs tools. Like ""Undo Send""....brilliant!! 6) Multiple account login 7) Integrated chat 8) Unlimited custom labels plus up to 12 message markers 9) Truly, a vast number of options, too many to list here Here's the bad stuff: 1) There's such richness at gmail the screen can become congested, but this CAN be moderated with user judgement 2) Too much scrolling needed. I'd love to see a return-to-top button installed at the bottom of a screen All said, it's FREE remember. Online storage is limited but the number is so large I've never even used half of it in over 4 years.

Gmail problemApril 27, 2011 By ralphiewho
Generally speaking, Gmail is an excellent program but it has one feature that Google apparently cannot. If you receive a message with embedded frames (art, pictures), and then send them to others via a ""forward"", if the new recipient has Gmail, they will likely not be able to see the embedded material -- only a frame around the missing art or picture. This does not always occur, but quite frequently it does occur. Right now it seems to always occur when coming from otherwise trusted Gmail accounts. The Google help links suggest some work arounds but for me, they do not work. This is not a new problem -- the help page shows this is an ongoing problem. The problem may be caused by the way Google treats mail that, in their protocol, might contain improper material -- scams and the like. Whatever, they have known about it for a long time and it is not fixed. I don't like the use of ""labels"" versus ""folders"" but one can live with this. The failure to display the frame contents really bugs me but otherwise, it is a good program.

Gmail Review - Free Email ServiceApril 02, 2011 By skiouraki
I am a Gmail User for years. It's functional and fast. However, many troubles come up all the time. First of all, i've noticed that other users are reading my emails, then pictures can't be seen quite well in preview or when you forward to others, it stucks many times and crashes your pc, emails lost, i delete addresses and appear again and again, hundreds of spam and advertisements etc. In conclusion, i haven't found so far a better free email account and believe me i've tried many so far so that's why i'm still using GMAIL.

Gmail's interface is awfulMarch 18, 2011 By makenai
Their ""clever"" labels, etc., make it a pain to find your stored e-mails. I mean, when you're filing at home, do you put all your papers in one box, then color-code them with labels? No, you put them in folders, then put them in the box. It's a time-honored solution because it works. I only have Gmail because I have Google Voice...and then, I have to go through my Gmail and delete EVERY SINGLE NOTIFICATION that I've gotten a Voice message. Seriously, do they think I'm too stupid to check my voicemail? Perhaps there's a way to stop the notifications, but Gmail's help is so useless, that it's easier just to delete the notifications en masse every month. Google Voice suffers from Gmail's problem of making messages hard to find, once you've stored them. Then, when you find the Voice message, the ""play"" button is gone, so you can't replay it again from the web interface. As a well-organized person, I find Gmail to be slow and cumbersome. Not to mention the well-known security issues, and that ""little"" incident where thousands of Gmail users lost all their messages. I was one of the lucky ones who didn't lose anything, so I used Microsoft's service that lets you transfer all your Gmail to your Hotmail account. You know things are bad, when a Microsoft service is actually useful in comparison.

Google out in spaceMarch 05, 2011 By mickie001
I've been a gmail user for years and used to be a huge fan but I find Google has wandered down the Microsoft highway (they don't care about their users any more)....Now one has to click twice to sign out....were so many people signing out by mistake that this had to be added or was is to ensure a last look at all their ads?? Information on settings not used very often is hard to find but easier than getting an answer from Google (in outer space)

GMAIL SEARCH IS TERRIBLE. JUST TERRIBLE.February 16, 2011 By skmidk
OH GOD. WHY IS GMAIL SEARCH ACTUALLY SO SO SO TERRIBLE? All of the above is fine. Really. I agree. It's wonderful to be able to filter and whatnot. But. BUT. GMAIL DOES NOT ALLOW FOR PARTIAL SEARCHES. This means that if you search for ""bush"" but your email has only the plural form ""bushes,"" GMAIL WON'T FIND IT. Imagine a search engine that could not provide results for ""Elections"" if all you typed in was ""Election."" Imagine looking for an email with a string of numbers, say 1234, but the number is actually 12345. GMAIL WON'T FIND IT. EGADS One of the WORST features Gmail offers, which I cannot FOR THE LIFE OF ME understand how Google continues TO THIS DAY to leave unresolved.

    GmailFebruary 13, 2011 By Annofaday
My service provider is no longer going to offer email service after Sept. 2011. Therefore all users were instructed to join Gmail. I did & for the short time (less than a month), I have been locked out more than I can count! This is disgusting!!!!!! My server NEVER gave me a problem. Thank God I still am able to use the current account until Sept. I found all the above articles very interesting in that the majority are very dissatisfied with gmail as I am. One article did cast a light on the problem possibly. I have a MAC & there I think lies the problem for gmail anyway. My Daughter has a Yahoo account & a MAC & has NEVER encountered a problem. I am closing the gmail account & finding a better, more suitable account ASAP! Oh, by the way a friend's Yahoo account was hi-jacked & he was able to talk to a real live person on the phone @ Yahoo.com. They fixed the problem for him immediately! Seems to me Google needs to take a lesson from Yahoo & provide support be it a real person or an online tech. I'm outta here Google.....good luck. :(

GMail: The best web-based email serviceFebruary 11, 2011 By htmlvb
I think Gmail is the best email service because it adds everything together: simplicity and functionality. They have Gmail labs which is great, and the online support really helps you a lot. I think the reason why some people don't like Gmail is because they don't know how to use it. I looked at some of the reviews above and the problems they talk about can be solved very easily and it has nothing to do with Google. For example, some people say they can't log in. Maybe that's because you changed it and forgot? If you use Gmail properly, you will definitely love it.

Gmail account for albums and or blogger!!! YesJanuary 19, 2011 By boraborasands1
I have gmail since 2006 since their version and beginning was still quite new. Now differents slight changes. As i do receive quite lots of mails and replies sometimes, I use to create lots of folders to separate them . Unlike Yahoo for exemple all element come into one, and it is very confusing to retrieve properly. Lay out must be reviewed. Despite the fact the is is the very unorganised mail, it is brillant for sharing. A google mail account is needed for uploading to picasa, or blogger. Picasa albums are simply great. Once an album is shared with some of gmail's contact it stays in the parametres, and added friends provide alert to your gmail. 1 - Simply gmail is a google products, and links perfect with picasa album and Blogger, and Panoramio ( a world pictures community accompanied to excellent maps! ) 2 - To be recommended for photos fans using the albums, and blogging. 3 - For mail: For some who likes to suscribe to newsletters alterts from various websites, without ever having to proceed replies it is fine. 4 - Having around 2500 messages in my inbox, and quite labels, the conversations still appears, example with many replies all will come, some items minimised in the text above. Even more confusing whne you open quoted text. I am writing about the daily in a logical way for gmail. It's got great services and others things that derives from that. To fully experiences google and gmail, you should use their other features and let google take you to their communiy concepts!

    boo hoo gmailDecember 15, 2010 By absdyeheart1
I have been with Google's gmail for some years. During my membership twice I have not been able to log in and yesterday evening was no different. The morning I read messages but to go back in in the evening to communicate with school was a no. I am still not able after trying just before writing this review. When I type a few letters of my user name the password usually comes on; today was no exception as of the other times but after trying all passwords ever used nothing worked. I JUST CANNOT LOG IN. It would seem secruity is taken toooo far. What is the use of a secret question? Insult to injury is when the password is sent to the alternate email and cannot log in there. This is redic!!!! As with companies that are able to get big enough to ""go public"" it is just a matter of time before respect dies. @gmail.com

Cannot see pictures on forwaded emailsDecember 13, 2010 By nanbri2531
I have used gmail for 4 months with no problem. Well, that is until 3 days ago. My friends started sending me messages that they weren't getting pictures with my forwarded emails. Apparently this has been going on for months with other users and it looks as though the ""gmail team"" will do nothing about it. I am shopping for a new email account now. Steer clear of gmail and save yourself the hassle.

Are we using the same gmail?December 03, 2010 By Hughluvert
My son loves google and talked me into switching a few years ago. Nearly all programs seem to arrive only 90% developed. As for gmail in particular I have had to go online to the general public (Not Google Support which is an oxymoron.) for help. What I suspect is the final straw is their arrogance. I can't send email to a niece with a Comcast address which I could before. No change, no service, no answer. Just run a search on the frustrated people wanting to import email from sbcglobal. You would think that they would want you to leave a competitor. I came to this site looking for a recomendation and all of the praise of gmail has me wondering

Gmail should improve their email systemNovember 01, 2010 By Badrajith
Gmail should improve their email system. I've worked with my Gmail account for over a year. But, sometimes I've an issue with Gmail that it doesn't receive emails sent by some online services. I looked them in the Spam folder but not found. They always issue a new feature, but don't try to improve their email system.

recipients from contacts list not receiving emailsOctober 11, 2010 By Andygau01
I have had my account with gmail now for 12 months +. I also have an account for a group I am involved with. Lately I have been more than slightly peeved on finding out that people I have contacted, (Not always the same ones) are not receiving emails I am sending. It is extremely infuriating trying to organise events for these people if they do not receive the messages I am sending out. Also it would be great if Gmail had a message received notification inclided in the system.

Fed upOctober 10, 2010 By larrwinn
I have had a gmail account for quite a while now. Loved it. Lately, however! The speed has decreased at times to no movement. It shows ""loading"", then ""still working"". That is sign in, opening a message, etc. Then, I began losing whole contacts, or parts of contacts. The final blow was when I opened the ""all mail"" folder, also know as archived. It was empty. Several hundred mails gone. Today, I added about 20 mails to the folder. About half an hour later, I opened it again, and all but two mails were gone. Have gone back to my ISP address for now.

Offensive adSeptember 24, 2010 By podsnappery
I never liked the feeling that the email carrier is reading my emails. I know that it's just a machine that's doing it, so I put up with it. But, yesterday it picked up on my religion and put an ad from a website that is anti my religion and that was the last straw for me. That's why I came to about.com. I'm looking for a new email carrier.

An additional con to gmailAugust 25, 2010 By sedwin
An additional con not mentioned to anyone concerned with privacy is that gmail keeps track (maintains a record of everyone that you have ever sent an email to). This information was relayed this evening (8.24.10) on MSNBC. It's unfortunate to me that these corporations are willing to sacrifice the rights and freedoms of their customers almost immediately after they become successful. I understand that this is a business decision probably partially based on advertising as well as security based (governmental paranoia and fascist policies), but it means that I'll be looking around for another service simply because I don't appreciate institutions abusing others rights and privacy especially without notifying them that doing so.

Gmail is, probably, the best webmail serviceAugust 09, 2010 By erwin.hofmann
Being an IT pro I've tested many of the free web mail services over the years and have to say that Gmail is one of the best (if not the best of all) and, although financed by advertisements, the Gmail front end is simple, quick and actually very clear and Ad's are quite unobtrusive. I think that many of the, for mentioned, problems lie in a misunderstanding of Gmails feature set (most often, I guess, by Mac users) ... which is, I agree, a bit different to the way some mail client (computer programs) work ... but nonetheless very powerful. I remember to have missed the folder option, at first as well, until I realized that labeling is, in fact, a much more powerful option (one email can be related to different categories etc). Yes, sorting has been missed, somewhat, but can easily be overcome with Gmails search option (searching for a senders email address will list all of its related emails etc.) ... and to all of you who complained about the delete function ... well, that is how it works everywhere ... emails that are deleted from an IMAP folder (except for those in Spam or Trash) will have just their label removed and will still exist in 'All Mail' archive. To delete them, simply move or save the emails to the Trash folder, this will, subsequently, delete them in all folders. Two Gmail features I, personally, cherish a lot, is, for one, Gmails ability to fetch emails from another mail server and secondly that you can, simultaneously, be logged in from different computers (worldwide) to one, central, Gmail account (webmail) ... how about that ... a true Small Office Application for free ... Over the years I tested and have setup Gmail with different email client programs (Mac Mail, Entourage, Thunderbird, Outlook, Outlook Express) on Windows and Mac PC's (POP and IMAP) and found it easy to setup and reliable to work with. And the, now always on, secure SSL/TLS protocol, that provides data transfer encryption, is a big plus to me and should be to every one else. One wish, I voiced to Google a couple of times, would be to provide us with a certified standalone (or browser Ad-on) SMTP client for all the Web sites that rely on 'mail to' ... There is a very sore point though, to Gmail, which I agree with ... it's the lack of a real customer service and I fear the day (for over 5 years now) where Gmail will lock me out and I have no person to talk to and help me to get me back in again.

Mixed review -- free is good, but not greatJuly 01, 2010 By sparxva
Gmail is nice in that if offers free IMAP and POP3 access, but the IMAP implementation is weird and doesn't actually work well with standard mail clients like Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail. For example, deleting a message in your desktop mail client doesn't actually delete the message on Gmail. Instead, it moves it from your inbox to an email archive. Similarly, I can view my Gmail just fine on my iPhone, but if I delete the message with the build in mail app Gmail won't actually delete the message; it just moves it to an archive. To actually delete a message you attempted to delete from Outlook or Mail, you have to go to the archive through the web-based interface, select the message and tell Gmail to delete it again. In short, it is free, but poorly implemented for compatibility.

    NOT reliable.June 27, 2010 By esaille
I trusted gmail's reliability and used for business mailings and important personal messaging. It was working properly until June 25,2010 when I was locked out for at least 50 hours!!! (I am still waiting). It gave temporary error while logging in. There was a link to report the problem (the only way to communicate gmail team) but the only thing I can get was automated reply. There was at least 50 people who wrote that they were suffering from the same problem. One day later, a google employee wrote a message in the forum saying that he was sorry but google were working on the problem and might not access our account until the evening next day. It is evening next day and gmail still gives the same error and I don't know when the problem will be fixed. I will no longer use gmail, so I am searching for the best email service provider; that's why I am in this page now.I advice you not to trust gmail. It is NOT RELIABLE.

In case your account gets blocked, it's overJune 24, 2010 By anonymous177
I had an account there for several months. It worked, no problems at all. Fast, reliable, etc. But then one day, for no reason, I tried to login and my account was blocked. I never used it for spamming or whatsoever. I'm just a simple user with a few emails per day. I tried to contact Google several times, but they simply do not answer to noone. Stay away from there, you will never ever get any support from Google.

    No supportMay 15, 2010 By mad_anthony
Yea, it's free, I know. But, my email was disabled and I don't know why. They ask you to fill out a recovery form. Some questions: list up to 5 addresses that you send to regularly. I don't know. I put in the addresses when I set it up. To actually remember, exactly, five addresses? I can't remember my best friends phone number. I put it in my phone and he's speed dial 3. List 4 labels in your account. Well, okay, but if they're not spelled EXACTLY, will you reject them (e.g. My Family or my family)? And the day, month, year I signed up? Who remembers this?? I created the account to be dedicated specically to my job search. I sent out over 200 resumes and dozens of follow up notes. It is the sole email contact for potential employers to contact me, but now emails sent to gmail are rejected. Yea, my fault, eggs in one basket. But, shouldn't they do me (us) the courtesy of telling us why they are disabling accounts. Do a search for disabled accounts and you'll find that it happens often and people RARELY get their account back. I hope they give it back, but I have little hope. I am going to set up multiple accounts at multiple providers and have everything forwarded everywhere. Sucks to put so much trust in them and find out (the hard way) that they can take away all your access for any reason, or no reason at all.

AVOID IT it always has issues and is slow or down often..and when something goes wrong..too bad. you can notify google but they NEVER RESPOND. i tried to enter one g mail account the other day and i was told it was TEMPORARILY disabled. no reason given .58 hours later it is still not available. i have followed all of their suggestions. in their forum and ' expert"" ( not a google employee) told me if i did not like it to go somewhere else and get an account. another expert told me to leave HIS stream. i have written to google at least 20 time through various links ..and nothing. why does one have to got to a forum where random people give advice..isnt that goolges job? today all my other google accounts did not work..i got some code 67 or such..when i tried to find out what that was..i could not..i did find that many others had the same issue. so avoid google mail. it does not work and is often a mess and there is NO support.

Google and their gmail service does not have a live customer service representative. I need to get back in to my email, Gmail account and it will not allow me unless I remember an old security question answer, ahhh! I need help, even after I have been through the reset password tactic many times already.

Terrible serviceApril 11, 2010 By sharilea
gmail is terrible. I have not been able to use it as I did in the beginning for weeks. I have tried to get help eveywhere. I even called the library to see if they could help with different places. They said they are a free email and they do not care if you get help or not or if you are satisfied. I started out with Yahoo and I should have stuck to it. Someone said I should get another site for specific stuff. What a mistake! Now I will have to change all my accounts to Yahoo.

Have Tried FastMail & AOLApril 03, 2010 By Ninefifty
Googlemail is the best in my opinion. Fastmail lets you receive for free but not send for free, use mailing lists for free or edit your username for free. AOL lets you do all the above but not edit your username or have e-mail forwarding so say e-mail comes into your in-box and you want that forwarded automatically no options in the above. GMail however has them all - and they are FREE!!! Great for work as my employers are modernising. Better for security. Bosses don't know I am hiding and if anybody hacks in, all they will see will be work related stuff, or nothing at all if my mail have been forwarded correctly.

GMAIL HAS GREAT FEATURESApril 02, 2010 By LoriFrancesGiz
I am surprised at some of the poor reviews. Some of the statements are just false, and I can only assume that those users have not taken the time to read and understand how the features work. It is a shame because the Gmail team has outdone the average email service. The lab features alone are extensive, and user friendly too. ---To correct, the user CAN see all sent mail, and can also archive sent mail to any folder. ---One user commented that there is only one folder. Yes that is true until user sets up new folders - 100's if you want with colored labels. ---There are also a variety of programming tools to filter incoming mail and drop it directly into these folders. The filtered mail can skip the inbox all together. Gmail makes it easy to filter emails by allowing you to run test searches before you finalize your filters. Emails can be filtered by email name, groups of words, and even has a line for what not to look for. Additional programming tools allow for the use of , , etc. ---The Star feature consists of various tools and symbols in various colors and are great for followup. My understanding is that Gmail is working on allowing the user to organize the stars by color which will definitely enhance that feature. At present, starred items fall at the top of the inbox. ---Can't filter by date, but supposedly they are working on that. ************************************************ Sampling of many features in addition to typical features: multiple inboxes hide or show specific folders hide or show specific labels from subjects download specific folders archive folders forward all email or certain filtered mail to another account. filter mail and send it to trash vacation responder language translation, and editing features transliteration - phonetic typing advanced attachment features email forwarding to phone 5 second chance to undo sent email - that saved 3x google document sharing google calendar and reminders custom gadgets custom home page/ themes plus more I get very little SPAM/JUNK MAIL

Good, but has problems with MacintoshMarch 09, 2010 By wealthychef
This is a good service, it's rare to find good reliable IMAP for free and IMAP is definitely useful if you have more than one place you want to check your email, like a computer at work, a computer at home and an iPhone. The downside is that there is a bug with OS X Mail.app and gmail where you keep getting locked out. This has NOT been fixed in OS 10.6.2. It is about to make my friend leave gmail. The other thing is that Google is famous for keeping all your email after you have deleted it. What's that about, Google? Why do you need to keep my private data on your server after I delete it? That smells.

should be loads betterFebruary 09, 2010 By dave54321
GMail pro - decent search of key words CON - no files to organize messages (the labeling system is stupid!), small window, impossible to edit existing emails. The worst thing of all is that once you set up an account, you cannot change your user name. If you want to change your name, you have to set up a new account and start all over again.

Gmail LABELING and EMAIL ORGANIZATIONFebruary 03, 2010 By karleffandy
UNTIL NOW I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE LABELING OF THIS GMAIL. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE ARRANGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION OF THE MAIL AND THE SYMBOLOGIES. I CANNOT DRAG AND DROP ONE EMAIL TO LABEL! I CANNOT PICK ONCE WITHOUT OPENING IT! I CANNOT USE PICK-CTRL! IT IS GOOD FOR A SLOW LEARNER!

    Gmail Good But...December 28, 2009 By Iankarus
Gmail lacks one important feature, namely the ability to sort by key fields such as sender, subject, size, date, etc. If sorting is not important to you, Gmail is fine; otherwise you'll need to use another service.

Terrible. Messy and Unorganized.December 27, 2009 By venusazaboy
I have used Gmail for about a year now and I am ready to switch. My emails are so unorganized. They do not offer folders to move emails into. Yes, you can ""star"" the emails but that doesn't help because everything stays in one folder. My emails have never been so unorganized using other web-based email providers. It may be good for those that only have a couple contacts, but I have many and I subscribe to many email newsletters and it becomes a jumbled mess very quickly. I would recommend you try a different email program and avoid this one like the plague.

DO NOT USE GMAILDecember 20, 2009 By nyflazdw
I had my account hacked and taken over by someone in the UK. My account contained personal and Financial information. Google has NO CUSTOMER SERVICE number and has done nothing to recover my account. The only recourse with gmail is to fill out a recovery form. I get an email from gmail almost immediately after I submit the form as if it is on an automatic response that I have not provided sufficient evidence that this is my account. Save yourself the frustration and use anyone but gmail.

Gmail is the Google approach to email and chat. Practically unlimited free online storage allows you to collect all your messages, and Gmail's simple but very smart interface lets you find them precisely and see them in context without effort. POP and powerful IMAP access bring Gmail to any email program or device.

    Forwarding MessagesOctober 12, 2009 By 20huggy08
I like gmail...except when it comes to cleaning up all the incoming name and address's on a incoming message that was forward to me .. the message has been forward at least 5 times and all name and address on the orginial incoming message get longer and longer? I can't seem to delete and/or clean up all the names on the on any forward incoming emails before I forward then on.? When I re-forward the orginial message ..a long list of all the people who every received the 1st forward keep re-appearing on every forward message and the Name and address's keeps getting longer and longer.. with each forward? I can't seem to delete all the incoming names before I re-send the forward on ...I see everyone's name who ever got the message again and again? ...Example if the orginial message had been forwarded 5 times and I forward that same message for the 6th time....the list can be now show a half of page of name and address's long, before one gets to the body of the message.? Which is distracking. Who wants to read a half of page of names? The delete key doesn't seem to do the job...I have checked the forwarded message that I sent forward to see if I deleted the long list of names...and all the names that I thought I deleted ..are all still all there?? I want only the names of the people that I forward the message to to appear? Otherwise I guess it is OK..??

    SpamSeptember 02, 2009 By nmcannally
I liked gmail until I inadvertently gave my email address to something online that generated hundreds of spam emails daily and I am now having many of them break through into my regular account. If you can keep your address private then it works fine but look out once spammers get it. They do not seem to have a remedy for this except a new account.

I don't like G mail because you can't email multiple people easily. The first time I sent a e-mail to multiple people I created a group, the next time the groups were gone and the group tab wasn't even there. I will be changing to a different server.

I loved Gmail, until I forgot my password. I was always able to access gmail from my home computer, but unable to access from any other computer since I could'nt remember my password. I went through their very complicated recovery system, and was told they could not verify ownership of the accounct. After this encounter I was no longer able to access the account from my personal computer. I waited a few more days then tried again. By this time I had been able to find where I had written the original password, provided the date the account had been opened, who had invited me and names of those in my contact list. Once again I was told I could not provide enought info to verify ownership and the account was shut down. I lost all of my saved messages, some very important, my pictures in picasso and contacts I am still trying to replace.

Very buggy and no way to let them know.July 11, 2009 By ganerd
They only recently even got the thing out of Beta stage development. And the bugs are still there. It is no wehre ready for public use. Had a gmail account but disappointed when the totally lost my mail. I tried to get on to a list server and although there are no bounces, my mail just disappeared. The problem still exist. To see my listserver messages, I had to move to a more reliable email system, like hotmail...?? Believe it or not, Hotmail worked i thise area when GMai wouldn't. It is imposable to let hem know of problems. There is never a Google employee on the forum to answer questions...you just have to try to help each other out. Bugs cant be fixed nor even brought to their attention that way. Also unlike Yahoo, they have a limitation on storage . They also do not have automated labeling to keep groups of contacts together. I assure you the only 5 star rating here are by google employees or people that do not know what a real email system is.

The Gmail biggest problems are: 1- That Gmail doesn't recognize the dots anyway and that makes a problem to many users as you've a variant forms for your own email address. 2- That, dormant or deleted email cannot be reused and reissued again after deletion and not being available for new users. I guess it's gonna be better to solve these two issues.

    I Love ItJune 19, 2009 By LeaJ.
I love Gmail except for the fact that you cannot add images and links to saved signatures. They have labs and ask for suggestions so I am hoping that this feature is added in the near future. All that you have to do to organize your inbox (IE: find and delete duplicate messages) is to click on the name field and messages will be listed according to who sent them. You can also set it up to show snippets which will then give a preview in the inbox of the subject line. I like Picassa for saving and organizing photos online as well. Photos are safe on the Gmail server in case of a computer crash.

Problems with GMAILMay 19, 2009 By tcmartin
I expect the major problem with GMAIL is the company ego is so large that after using their product for three years it really sucks. I am still using it now and need to transition to something else. I just hate the product. In yahoo I can go into the inbox and then sort the content alphabetically. That way I can get rid of duplicate messages and makes it so easy. You cannot do this with gmail. As a result you end up with garbage that accumulates. I would love to create a label and then a sub-label with gmail. The label could be friends and the sub=label be the name of each friend. no current email system that I know allows folders inside folders. Then when selecting a label to be able to sort alphabetically. Google is proud of their tool along with a major ego problem.

    Greatest Email out there!May 07, 2009 By xc_fan
Although it doesn't offer unlimited storage, Gmail's 7 gigabytes should offer you all the space you need! Perhaps one of the best things is the interface with archiving feature, the conversation threading, and best of all, LABS FEATURES! If you haven't tried it, they're found in settings, labs. There are many from allowing you to access email offline through your browser, Watching YouTube videos in the email, snake game and MANY more (I think at this point I have 35+ enabled) I definitely recommend it!

a love hate relationshipFebruary 13, 2009 By KingCrab
Gmail is an example of the quintessential love/hate relationship. While Gmail's performance, reliability, and interface fall into the love category, actually managing your email falls into the hate category. You don't have the same level of control over your messages... Unlike competing services, Gmail has opted to only display messages in a conversation view format where like messages are grouped together as one. The idea of conversation view is fine, but the implementation is poor. You are forced to use conversation view and cannot disable it. Gmail does not allow you to control the grouping, so you must rely on Gmail to decide which messages should be grouped together. You cannot add messages to an existing conversation, nor can you break apart a conversation. You cannot label individual messages in a conversation, only the conversation itself. I really wanted to like Gmail when I signed up, but I stopped using it when Gmail kept grouping messages together which are not part of the same conversation.

reply to mail sortingJanuary 27, 2009 By MegletTX
The previous reviewer indicated there were no folders for Gmail which is true. However they have something which you may find better called ""Labels"". I personally like labels even better than folders because I can put one email under multiple labels. For example I have one label called ""Receipts"" and one called ""eBay"". I can mark my receipts from eBay purchases as both and find under either category. There are a multitude of different reasons you might wish to have an email filed under multiple locations. Also if you click the ""archive"" button this removes the email from your main ""inbox"" so that it is not cluttering up your current emails. However if you click on a label it will bring you all emails either archived or in your inbox with that label. I love Gmail and there isn't a lot I'd change about it!!

no mail sort functionalityJanuary 15, 2009 By rockchik9
no folders or sorting in gmail. Only nice thing is free pop3 downloading. period. So look at it as one huge inbox. They give you outrageous amount of storage space but you will need it since you won't bother to clean out your inbox because it is too much work. If you get off on heirarchical organizing, filter creation, indexing, etc., go for it. No drag and drop here.

Usability problemsDecember 17, 2008 By pawebster
Gmail works well and filters Spam effectively. The interface is not intuitive, however. The various features and commands are dotted around the screen randomly, some as buttons, others just as normal text hyperlinks. Reply and Forward are placed obscurely at the bottom of the text of emails. The vaunted label system is supposed to be one of the best features, but I find it less than intuitive, especially as using it requires the use of a 'more actions' menu with 'Add label' confusingly greyed out. You cannot drag messages to the label list. If they would get someone from Apple to redesign the whole thing, it could be great.
