Awful supportMay 09, 2012 By chuch1115
Lycos won't recognize my user name or password even though I haven't changed it in 6 years. Contacting them sends me in circles and is impossible. Lycos is awful.

My Lycos e-mail was closed without warningDecember 30, 2011 By laurie.belvin
I got a message today that my Lycos e-mail account was closed due to inactivity. I just logged in and read my e-mail yesterday. Today they wanted me to pay $19.95 for letting me read my e-mail. I just had a regular individual e-mail account. So much for my free Lycos e-mail account. I am afraid to pay. Tomorrow they might want $49.95 or more without warning.

Racing to the bottomMarch 26, 2011 By The.Critic
Lycos was good when it was Eudoramail in the 1990s. It was still okay up until about 2005. The next version had a few problems then wasn't updated for years in the face of competition from Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail. Lycos finally tried to update in 2009 by switching to Zimbra open source mail software. It stunk. Lots of problems including lost mail and almost useless spam filtering. In late 2010, they switched yet again, and it's by far the worst yet. Only on Lycos does checking ""remember me on this computer"" setting mean ""log me out in a couple of hours, even if I leave the browser window open."" I've never seen any other website that does that. Only on Lycos do preferences in your settings persist only as long as you stay logged in (which, thanks to the above, means a couple of hours), resetting to defaults when you log back in. Only Lycos uses a three-pane window that badly mimics an email client. The big three long since realized that's a bad idea. The spam filters are useless. Mark messages as spam all you want. They'll keep coming into your inbox. There are so many other problems, I can't remember them all. Contact Lycos through their convoluted ""help system"" that requires a separate account (!) and they'll tell you their technicians are working on the problems. The new system has been live for almost a half year now. If they can't get these simple things right after months, they probably never will. Stay far away.

Tricky LycosMarch 20, 2011 By danlundy
I've been with Lycos for a number of years but when I got home from the hospital I couldn't enter the site. It said I have to make a new password as a routine request. Then it said the new password was the same as the old password--which it was not. I had just invented. I tried the old password and it said that was the old password. And it said the new password was the old password. Some time later they sent a message saying my email was reinstated. I had not requested that because I didn't know anything about it except that I needed to routinely have a new password. But, all of my messages were gone. Then they suggested I get a paid membership. I tried to message them but the procedure was way to complicated for me to manage. I am joining the many people who have complained about this organization. This really hurts people.

March 18th said Closed due to innactivity then...March 18, 2011 By lycossucks
...when i logged out and tried log back in got a message that: Due to recent abuse of Lycos services from your email provider, signups from your provider must be manually reviewed. .... and your account will be unlocked shortly. We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for using Lycos. i check this account at least 3 times a week, read my emails and usually send out and email once a month. But this does not mean innactivity in any sense at all. Then this message saying my email provider , i thought lycos WAS my email provider.

Lycos e-MailMarch 02, 2011 By BrianG2
Been with them for 10+ years. This week (February 23, 2011) I could not log in to retrieve or view e-mails. Then I heard that messages were being bounced back as undeliverable. Submitted trouble report to Lycos and still have not heard back. No announcements or information available, no response to my support questions, nothing. This is the worst service I have ever received from a company. Don't know if I'll ever get my stored e-mails, and now I have to try to notify everyone that may have sent me an e-mail. Big problem for me, and the lack of support makes it even worse.

Issues with Lycos Mail again February 2011February 28, 2011 By wjperez01
When Lycos switched to zimbra in summer 2010 they had all kinds of issues. Then they slowly got those working. In December 2010 they did something else and had more issues. Now, in February 2011 going into March there are yet more issues going on for 2 weeks and not able to access e-mail. I just get a message that says the web page was cancelled when I try to log on. I opened a help desk ticket with Lycos and was basically told after over a week that they have had a lot of inquiries from customers (gee, ya think?) and they are looking into it and then they closed the ticket. These people are pathetic and incompetent. I don't know what all their issues are but clearly the issues are beyond their expertise or these problems wouldn't keep happening. They should have left a good thing alone.

Lycos MailFebruary 07, 2011 By pathros
I've had lycos mail for over 10 years and have seen it go down hill until Dec 2010 when it just stopped operating for no reason I could discover. I'd heard that lycos in Europe was being discontinued somewhere but I'm still trying to figure out what is happening to Lycos Mail since most if not all my email was with them.

Lycos mailAugust 11, 2010 By dirtymother
I've had Lycos mail for 10 years now. I've never had a major problem. They prompted me to sign up for deluxe (fee services) but I just ignored it. Every issue I've had, I just sent a help ticket and they've gotten back to me within 24 hours with extremely helpful advice.

Servers Down Again! No Explanation or Tech SupportJuly 10, 2010 By jasarthur
After two weeks of very slow performance and increased spam, Lycos mail has completely failed. I can't even log on. All attempts to get tech support have failed. This has all happened since Lycos switched to Zimbra software.

Lycos Mail not hearly as good as it used to beJune 30, 2010 By timdow
I have had a Lycos mail account for 10 years. It has gone from very good to unusable, at least for me. I think they have not dedicated $$$ to site/hardware improvements over the years. Now they have partnered with someone for the ""Zimbra"" interface, and that seems to be a dismal failure also, probably because again they don't have the server horsepower to handle it. Run away quickly to another free email provider.

Wish there were minus stars...March 12, 2010 By scsamson
Lycos has deteriorated from a decent free email service to an unreliable, customer-unfriendly site. Recently, the entire site format changed, hiding spam filters if there still are any, with no notice to customers. Two weeks ago, the server was down for almost 2 days. No notice, no explanation, no update on projected cure time. This morning, I finally got a response to my question about when service would be restored -- ""this was just a temporary problem. You should retest and let us know if it continues"". Two weeks after a 2 day lapse in service?? I think they should be embarrassed to continue to pretend to offer a service.

No longer FreeMay 31, 2009 By Jabberwock666
Lycos suddenly shut off the free email spigot. Without warning, they stopped access to users email accounts unless they sign up for their pay service. It would have been nice to have some advance warning so I could change my email address without losing messages. Fortunately I only used Lycos for a secondary account so I won't really miss anything important. In short, forget using an email service that holds your messages hostage. Granted, Lycos is only charging 19.95 for a year, but it seems likely that they may be completely out of business before the year is over. One can only hope.

slammed with demand for paymentMay 31, 2009 By Chickenmaven
I have enjoyed great service from Lycos for 5+ years. Tried to log on today & was prompted to register for a $19.95 service. I was given no notice that this was forthcoming. This feels like extortion!!!!

Glitchy, slow, too many banner ads and pop-upsNovember 07, 2008 By ProfM
professorkm's Full Review: Lycos.com (by 1stUp) My personal experience with Lycos mail has been a complete “turn off”! It has nothing to offer by way of advanced features. It is full of glitches and the limited features offered often do not work properly, if at all. The banner ads and pop-ups will drive you crazy. Technical support is practically nonexistent if you can even get them to respond to your inquiry. There are many much better email providers available, even among the free ones.
