    POPFile Anti Spam is Great!January 30, 2010 By etcurrie
    So far (using it for a few days), Spam to my inbox and even junk-mail folder ( using Vista Windows Mail) has almost disappeard and seems to be getting less the more I use this marevellous program.

    A Web developer does not a support person makeDecember 10, 2009 By Clearstory
    I've been using this program for years and it absolutely rocks! I'm glad the current developers picked up the program maintenance when the original author let it languish. However, when something takes up time and you're not getting paid for it, even when it's a labor of love, sometimes you have to let it go. This isn't so much of a review as it is a rebuttal of the first reviewer. Stating that because you're a developer you know how to configure an application to work properly within the context of a system is like stating because you're a race car mechanic, you can drive a race car. Ummm... No. If you understand what a proxy is and how TCP/IP ports work, you won't have a problem configuring PopFile. If you are persistent when you run into a bit of trouble, you should be able to figure out how to configure your e-mail client to talk to PopFile, even if the documentation is a bit sketchy. I haven't looked at it in a long time but, like most software doc, it probably still is. I'm neither a developer nor am I a support person, although I've been both in much earlier professional lives. I do know that support - the function of the person who would typically configure disparate hardware and software to work together in one machine - and software development are two totally different skills and require different knowledge and skills, as well as temperaments. Support requires that someone possess a wide base of knowledge and knows a bit about a lot - a.k.a. being a mile wide and an inch deep (out of necessity). Development requires the opposite type of person - someone who's an inch wide and a mile deep - an expert in one or a couple of different subjects. BTW, for those of you who think support people don't know much, it could be due to several reasons: 1) Your employer provides them no training. 2) Your support people themselves take no initiative to teach themselves so they can keep their skills current or upgrade their skills. 3) Your employer hires the least expensive help on the market, which is oftentimes the case, so the people that would provide good service have no interest in support positions at your company. 4) Your company might force its support people to burn themselves out. One support person should be able to support 100 employees. I know of companies where the ratio is 1:300, which is ridiculous. Bottom line, you get what you pay for, even in the job market. Also, if your company tends not to treat its support people well, you'll notice two things: 1) Support people won't treat you all that well (everything flows downhill). 2) Your company will gain an unwelcome reputation. As a consultant, I know all the companies in my city from which I should stay away - and I do.

    Far too hard to get workingJuly 20, 2009 By baroni2486
    Got it installed and it didn't work? after much patience, I found out that you then have to follow an extrememly complicated procedure to get your email client to talk to the software you just installed, you have to change your outlook settings and then set up rules. Their explantion diagrams use the original Outlook so it isn't up to date and I really struggled in getting this to work. I'm in web development too, so I do know what I'm doing and I still struggled. I've now wasted an hour and a bit to get nowhere!!! You have to be good at IT to get this thing working!!!
