With Windows Mail or Outlook Express, you can access your AIM Mail account in a very comfortable way: the folder structure will be the same as in the web interface — automatically; when you delete or move a message it will be reflected if you open your AIM Mail account via the web or from a different computer the next time — automatically; copies of messages you send will be available to you anywhere — automatically.
Access a Free AIM Mail Account with Windows Mail
To add a free AIM Mail account in Windows Mail:
- Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu.
- Click Add....
- Make sure E-mail Account is selected.
- Click Next.
- Enter your name.
- Click Next.
- Enter your AIM Mail address (something like "ladedu@aim.com").
- Click Next again.
- Make sure IMAP is selected under Incoming e-mail server type:.
- Type "imap.aim.com" in the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: field.
- Enter "smtp.aim.com" under Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:.
- Make sure Outgoing server requires authentication is checked.
- Click Next >.
- Type your AIM Mail user name (AIM nickname) under E-mail username: ("ladedu", for example).
- Enter your AIM Mail password (AIM password) in the Password: field.
- Click Next > again.
- Click Finish.
- Highlight imap.aim.com in the Internet Accounts window.
- Click Properties.
- Go to the IMAP tab.
- Make sure Store special folders on IMAP server is not checked.
- Click OK.
- Click Close in the Internet Accounts window.
Access a Free AIM Mail Account with Outlook Express
To set up access to a free AIM Mail account in Outlook Express:
- Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu.
- Click Add.
- Choose Mail....
- Enter your name.
- Click Next.
- Enter your AIM Mail address (something like "ladedu@aim.com").
- Click Next again.
- Make sure IMAP is selected under My incoming mail server is a __ server.
- Type "imap.aim.com" in the Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: field.
- Enter "smtp.aim.com" under Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:.
- Click Next >.
- Type your AIM Mail user name (AIM nickname) under Account name: ("ladedu", for example).
- Enter your AIM Mail password (AIM password) in the Password: field.
- Click Next > again.
- Click Finish.
- Highlight imap.aim.com in the Internet Accounts window.
- Click Properties.
- Go to the Servers tab.
- Make sure My server requires authentication is checked under Outgoing Mail Server.
- Go to the IMAP tab.
- Make sure Store special folders on IMAP server is not checked.
- Click OK.
- Click Close in the Internet Accounts window.
- Now, select Yes to download the list of AIM Mail folders to Outlook Express.
- Click OK.
Can't Send Mail from Your AIM Mail Account in Windows Mail or Outlook Express?
If you encounter problems sending mail, try this:
- Select Tools | Accounts... from the menu in Windows Mail or Outlook Express.
- Highlight imap.aim.com.
- Click Properties.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Enter "587" under Server Port Numbers for Outgoing mail (SMTP):.
- Click OK.
- Click Close.
