How to Use Yahoo! Mail or Gmail Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows Live Hotmail

By

It's great that Windows Live Hotmail offers so many handy keyboard shortcuts. If only they'd not require holding down the Ctrl key so much; if only they were not modeled on Windows programs so much!

If that's what you think with every Ctrl-Shift-J you press, maybe keyboard shortcuts borrowed from Yahoo! Mail or Gmail are for you.

Use Yahoo! Mail or Gmail Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows Live Hotmail

To enable keyboard shortcuts you know from Yahoo! Mail or Gmail in Windows Live Hotmail:

  • Select Options | More options in Windows Live Hotmail.
  • Follow the Change keyboard shortcuts link under Customize your mail.
  • To use Yahoo! Mail keyboard shortcuts:
    • Make sure Yahoo! Mail is selected under Select which mode you'd like to use:.
  • To use Gmail keyboard shortcuts:
    • Make sure Gmail is selected under Select which mode you'd like to use:.
  • Click Save.

Note that enabling Yahoo! Mail or Gmail keyboard shortcuts in Windows Live Hotmail will replace all existing shortcuts. If Gmail does not offer a key combination for sending a message, Windows Live Hotmail will not fall back to its native shortcut.
