SimplyHeadlines - Rss Feed Reader

Heinz Tschabitscher

The Bottom Line

SimplyHeadlines delivers an easy to digest snapshot of the latest headlines from your favorite news sources, web sites and blogs to your email inbox once a day.
Nice for a quick overview, SimplyHeadlines is less apt for following certain sites as you do not get all the information published in between editions (but the same headlines multiple times if a feed changes less frequently).
SimplyHeadlines is no longer available.

Pros

  • SimplyHeadlines delivers headlines from RSS news feeds as a newspaper to your email inbox
  • An attractive and concise layout makes SimplyHeadlines a joy to read
  • SimplyHeadlines includes some suggested news outlets and blogs to follow

Cons

  • SimplyHeadlines sends but a snapshot of the current content in a feed
  • With feeds often updated, you will miss some stories, see headlines thrice for others
  • SimplyHeadlines does not support OPML, lets you set little for feeds except their order

Guide Review - SimplyHeadlines - RSS News Feed Reader

Sporting an attractive layout and one or two amusing random facts, SimplyHeadlines is, itself, entertaining to read. Unfortunately, it does not work as well as a news reader.

The SimplyHeadlines email arrives once per day with the latest headlines from each of your feeds. Depending on the publishing frequency this means you either do not get all that has been fit to post since your last edition or see the same headline on multiple days in a row.

What works for general top news does not work so well for tracking special interests or maybe software updates. (You can initiate immediate delivery of an updated edition of your news via the SimplyHeadlines site at any time, but this is hardly an option you want to use all the time.)

When setting up your SimplyHeadlines newspaper, you can choose from a number of popular feeds or add your own — one by one as SimplyHeadlines does not support importing or exporting subscriptions via OPML. It's also a pity that not more settings are available for individual feeds. All you can change, in somewhat crude a manner, is the order in which your headlines appear.

Of course, all of SimplyHeadlines's shortcomings mean it is a decidedly simple and easy to use service.
