Block Potentially Dangerous Remote Images in Windows Mail or Outlook Express

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

What Remote Images in Emails Mean for Your Privacy

If you open an email in Windows Mail or Outlook Express and it downloads the images referenced in the message automatically, not only do you get to see the nicely laid out email but the sender can see whether, when and possibly even where you opened the message.

If that prospect does not have you brim over with enthusiasm, you can tell Windows Mail or Outlook Express to refrain from downloading remote content automatically. This will not only protect your privacy but also prevents Windows Mail or Outlook Express from trying to establish an internet connection whenever you open an email containing remote images while offline.

Of course, you can still display the images in select emails or newsletters from senders you trust.
