How to Recover Opera Mail Accounts and Settings from a Backup Copy

From an early new Opera alpha to the final version; from one computer to another; from a broken disk's backup to the new shiny drive: importing old Opera mail settings and messages is very use- and helpful.

Fortunately, recovering mail and accounts from a backup copy is easy, too.

Recover Opera Mail Accounts and Settings from a Backup Copy

To restore messages and settings for all your Opera email accounts from a backup copy:

  • Select File | Import and Export | Import Mail… from the menu in Opera.
  • Highlight Import from Opera 7/8/9/10.
  • Click Next >.
  • Now click Browse.
  • Go to the "mail" folder you copied previously as a backup copy.
  • Highlight "accounts.ini" in that "mail" folder.
  • Click Select Opera 7/8/9/10 mail setup file, accounts.ini.
  • If you import only messages:
    • Make sure Import messages is selected.
    • Optionally, select an existing account under Import into:; imported messages will appear in that account.
    • Make sure Import settings is not checked.
  • If you want to import account settings, too:
    • Make sure <new account> is selected under Import into:.
    • Make sure Import settings is selected.
  • Click Next >.
  • Now click Finish.
