Use SMTP Authentication with Mozilla Thunderbird or Netscape

To prevent spammers from using their mail servers, many ISPs nowadays require you to log in not only for fetching mail but also for sending it. Here's how to make Mozilla Thunderbird, Netscape or Mozilla work with such SMTP servers that require authentication.

To configure SMTP authentication in Mozilla Thunderbird, Netscape or Mozilla:

  • Select Edit | Account Settings... or Tools | Account Settings... from the menu.
    • In Mozilla and Netscape, select Edit | Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings.
  • Go to the Outgoing Server (SMTP) category.
  • In Mozilla Thunderbird, highlight the desired SMTP server and click Edit....
  • Make sure the checkbox next to Use name and password is selected.
  • Enter your user name under User Name:.
  • Click OK.
