How to Import Mail from Outlook Express in Mozilla Thunderbird

By , About.com Guide

If you have been happy with Outlook Express in the past but now are (or expect to be) even happier with Mozilla Thunderbird, you probably have a hurdle to take: all your mail is stored in Outlook Express.

Fortunately, getting it into Mozilla Thunderbird for, again, even happier consumption, storing and handling, is easy. Mozilla Thunderbird has an importation feature that does it painlessly.

Import Mail from Outlook Express in Mozilla Thunderbird

To import messages from Outlook Express into Mozilla Thunderbird:

  • Select Tools | Import... from the menu in Mozilla Thunderbird.
  • Make sure Mail is selected.
  • Click Next >.
  • Highlight Outlook Express.
  • Click Next > again.
  • Now click Finish.

Mozilla Thunderbird imports all your local Outlook Express folders in sub-folders of a mailbox called Outlook Express Mail under Local Folders. Of course, you can move them to other folders (and thus integrate them fully with your Mozilla Thunderbird experience) by dragging and dropping them to desired folders.
