The Bottom Line

Remove Duplicate Messages finds and deletes duplicate messages across folders very fast in Mozilla Thunderbird. The selection of folders to scan (possibly with priorities) and the criteria for message comparison could be even more flexible in Remove Duplicate Messages, though.

  • Remove Duplicate Messages opens messages only in the background and in the preview pane

Guide Review - Remove Duplicate Messages 0.1.02 - Mozilla Thunderbird Extension

Whether a source of pride or despair, your large message store may not be so large after all. How I know this? I have just applied the Remove Duplicate Messages Extension to the messages stored in my Mozilla Thunderbird, and it found many an email that appeared in more than one folder.

Remove Duplicate Messages does look at a number of (configurable) criteria including the date, message ID, subject, sender and line count. Running Remove Duplicate Messages with these parameters nets a precise result surprisingly fast. Whether Remove Duplicate Messages can also look at the complete message content is not so clear. The option is there, but enabling it does not seem to have an effect.

Duplicates found by Remove Duplicate Messages in a somewhat unique but quite practicable display that lets you decide which messages to keep — Remove Duplicate Messages offers a sensible default — and perform the deletion.

It's a pity that the individual emails can only be opened in the background and in the preview pane, though. If the folders to scan could be selected freely, that were nice, and more options for both the comparison criteria and the actions to take never hurt.

In general, Remove Duplicate Messages is a fabulous and fast tool for cleaning any email account, though. (If you clean IMAP folders, make sure you have purged them first as Remove Duplicate Messages tends to include messages marked for deletion in its scan.)
