Heinz Tschabitscher

The Bottom Line

MinimizeToTray hides Mozilla Thunderbird to the Windows system tray always or just on request or even when you click "Close", brings it back upon single or double click, and offers shortcuts to oft-used actions from the tray icon, too. You cannot configure the commands available from that menu, though.

Pros

  • MinimizeToTray minimizes Mozilla Thunderbird to the Windows system tray, hiding it from the taskbar
  • The MinimizeToTray tray icon offers access to some frequently used actions
  • You can make MinimizeToTray minimize Mozilla Thunderbird to the tray when you click "Close"

Cons

  • MinimizeToTray offers no way to customize the try icon menu, which could include more, other actions
  • You cannot hide all Mozilla Thunderbird windows to the tray icon

Guide Review - MinimizeToTray 0.0.1 - Mozilla Thunderbird Extension

If at first you don't succeed… try, tray again. When MinimizeToTray has just been installed, its magic — sending and condensing Mozilla Thunderbird to the Windows system tray — is only available from the File menu.

If you manage to forget what you just read (which should not be too demanding a challenge), you may have to try and look a bit until you find that command. But then you start exploring, and discover MinimizeToTray's settings through Tools | Extensions, and you are set on a roll: MinimizeToTray will either minimize Mozilla Thunderbird to the tray always or just via the menu item.

Do you want the minimized window to spring back upon a single click on the icon, or do you prefer to double-click? You can even enable a feature common to applications that minimize to the tray that is so strange when you do not expect it yet so strangely useful when you do: minimize on close. When you click the Close button of Mozilla Thunderbird, it does not shut down but hide to the system tray icon as if minimized.

Unfortunately, MinimizeToTray can only hide the main Mozilla Thunderbird window when minimized. Compose windows, for example, remain visible in the task bar. Commands available from the MinimizeToTray icon's context menu comprise checking for new mail, composing a new message and viewing the address book. These are good choices, but they may not be perfect for you.

More and customizable actions might be nice.
