The Dock icon of Mac OS X Mail serves as an impressive image of how many new messages are waiting for new attention (394, currently... uh, no, make that 396...), but it also lets you create a new message quickly.

Compose a Message from the Mac OS X Mail Dock Icon

To start writing a new email message from the Mac OS X Mail Dock icon:

  • Control-Click on the Mac OS X Mail Dock icon to bring up its menu.
    • Alternatively, you can also click on the icon with the right mouse button or
    • click-and-hold it until the menu comes up.
  • Select Compose New Message from the menu.
