I am not too big a fan of skinnable software. Usually, skinnable means cryptic interfaces that are not even nice to look at. Pony Express is an exception. There are tons of great skins, and skinnability suits a tiny mail checker well.
Pony Express is an exception also because it is a good piece of software underneath. It supports POP and IMAP accounts and restricts itself to doing well what it is supposed to do: announcing mail. There are several alerting methods available, and Pony Express can give you an overview of the new messages, even supporting international languages.
Unfortunately, most settings apply to all accounts globally, and there are no filters to announce special mail especially, for example.
