gCount - Gmail Mail Checker

gCount - Gmail Mail Checker

Heinz Tschabitscher

The Bottom Line

gCount announces and counts new mail in a Gmail account conveniently in the Mac OS X menu bar. It only supports one Gmail account, though, and does not give any hints about the new messages. gCount is no longer maintained.
Pros
  • gCount lets you know about new mail in a Gmail account
  • Displays the number of new messages in the menu bar
  • gCount lets you open the Gmail "Inbox" or compose a new message quickly
Cons
  • gCount does not display any message information (unless in Growl mode)
  • You can only check "Inbox" and "All Mail", not other collections
  • gCount works with Gmail accounts only

Description

  • gCount checks for new mail in Gmail email account.
  • New messages can be announced via an icon or pure message count in the Mac OS X menu bar.
  • gCount checks either "All Mail" or your Gmail "Inbox" only.
  • You can open the Gmail "Inbox" or the composition screen in your browser directly from gCount.
  • gCount can announce mail via Growl or in its Dock icon in Mail-style.
  • gCount supports Mac OS X 10.3.

Guide Review - gCount 0.5 - Gmail Mail Checker

There are mail checkers for the Mac OS X menu bar aplenty, but only gCount supports Gmail accounts. gCount also supports only Gmail accounts (no POP, no IMAP, and no other web-based services).

You can choose gCount to appear as an envelope icon with the number of new messages displayed in the menu or put the message count itself in the menu bar. Of course, gCount can play a sound when it finds new messages.

It's nice that you can have gCount watch "All Mail" or the "Inbox" only, but it would be great if more flexible checking were available.

gCount also does not display any information about the new messages — such as the sender or subject, for example. It provides a handy shortcut to opening Gmail in your browser or start composing a new message, though, and is an all-around simple and unobtrusive but useful and slick utility.
