How to Send a Message in Plain Text from Windows Live Hotmail Classic

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

With text, richness is in the words, their meanings, relations and associations. It is not in the shapes that make up written language.

If you think that's true, you'll appreciate the fact that Windows Live Hotmail Classic lets you send emails that do not rely on fonts, colors, graphics and smilies to impact and influence. As an added benefit, you can be sure no recipient will ever complain about your sending dangerous, superfluous or obnoxious code.

Plain text emails please just about everybody, and they are easy to compose in MSN Hotmail. Let's find out how.

Send a Message in Plain Text from Windows Live Hotmail Classic

To send a message that uses only pure and genuine plain text from MSN Hotmail (you cannot, alas, send plain text only messages from Windows Live Hotmail):

  • Make sure the rich text editor is turned off.
    • Follow the Show plain text link if you see it.

Windows Live Hotmail's full version cannot send messages that are pure text. You can temporarily switch to Windows Live Hotmail classic to do that, of course.
