How to Group and Read Your Feeds Using Labels in Google Reader

By , About.com Guide

Google Reader likes to throw all the unread (and possibly even items you have already seen) in a basked and then give you a "lens" to look at each one, in seeming random order.

I find that immensely useful, but sometimes reading only items from feeds that contain stories pertaining to a certain topic — all my cherished food and cooking blogs and sites, for example — promises to be even more useful. Fortunately, it's easy to arrange, organize and read your feeds your way in Google Reader.

Group and Read Your Feeds Using Labels in Google Reader

To use labels to read your feeds in groups in Google Reader:

  • Choose Subscriptions | Edit subscriptions from the Google Reader toolbar.
  • For each of the desired feeds:
    • Follow its Add a label link.
    • Type all the desired labels you want the feed to appear under in the Add a label: field.
      • You can think of labels as folders.
      • To make a feed appear under two or more labels, separate them by comma.
      • Labels may not contain whitespace characters. Use underscores or hyphens instead.
      • To make a feed appear under both the "alchemy" and the "recipes" labels, type "alchemy, recipes", for example.
    • Click Save.
  • Alternatively, check all feeds you want to place under a label and select the label from Add label... under the More Actions drop-down menu.
  • Back at Google Reader, highlight a label under Labels to see its feeds and read all its items.
