Reader Notifier lets you know if any new unread items in your Google Reader account have arrived. A nice Mac OS X menu bar icon turns purple, and you can get the number of new articles, too. If Growl is installed, Reader Notifier can use it to announce new items, too.
The best of Reader Notifier is what is revealed upon a click on the now purple icon: headlines complete with a few lines of text as tooltips and options to mark both individual and all items read.
With single clicks, you can also open either Google Reader or any item's original page. Optionally, Reader Notifier also stars items as you mark them read individually — but ways to combine the two more flexibly would be great.
If you have more feeds in Google Reader than you care to be notified about, you can assign a label to the important sources and have Reader Notifier check only these. Reader Notifier does not give an overview of other labels and their unread items, though.
