How to Delete With a Swift Keyboard Shortcut in Gmail

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

"Archive, don't file" has always been one of Gmail's mottoes. The other is "Archive, don't delete."

Indeed, with plenty of space you can keep more of the emails you might one day perhaps eventually want to revisit. At the same time, deletion is mandatory — not because of storage constraints or daunting confusion, but because it is a clearing and wholesome act in itself.

To delete in Gmail, you can use the Delete key, of course. Or you delete as elegantly as you archive: using a key within easy reach.

To move a conversation to the Trash in Gmail:

  • Open the conversation you want to delete or make sure it is checked.
  • Press # (Shift-3 on a U.S. keyboard).

Note that the keyboard shortcut moves entire conversations to the Trash folder. You can delete individual messages using the More Actions menu.
