How to Use Gmail in Your Language

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Language is for the most part our interface to other people, to the world and to ourselves — it even is the interface to an email account like Gmail. Though there are a few pictograms that are hopefully easily understood, much of Gmail relies on words.

Now, while English is obviously a language you are comfortable with, it may not be "your" language. My mother tongue, for example, is the Austrian version of German. I am lucky. German is one of the languages natively supported by Gmail. Finding out if you are lucky, too, and making your language Gmail's (or just seeing what Gmail looks and reads like in Korean) is easy.

Use Gmail in Your Language

To use Gmail in your language:

  • Follow the Settings link (assuming English is the current display language of Gmail; if not, it is the third link from the right in the topmost line of your Gmail window) in the top navigation bar.
  • Make sure you are on the General tab.
  • Select the desired language under Language: Gmail display language.
  • Click Save Changes.
  • Click Yes to use your new language for other Google services (such as Google search or maps, for example) as well. Click No if you want to use the selected language for Gmail only.
