How to Unmute a Conversation in Gmail

By , About.com Guide

Isn't it nice to put some email conversations on hold, to mute them, to ban them from the inbox and not see their ilk again?

What, though, if you have muted a thread by mistake in Gmail, or muted to soon? Fortunately, unmuting any conversation — and having new messages appear in the inbox again — is just as easy.

Unmute a Conversation in Gmail

To unmute a conversation in Gmail and have future messages appear in your Gmail inbox again:

  • Open or check the desired conversation (or conversations).
    • You can use Gmail search to find it. Use "is:muted" as a search term to find all muted conversations; you can combine "is:muted" with your search terms and other search operators, of course.
  • Click More.
  • Select Unmute from the menu.
    • Now, you can archive the conversation from your inbox, of course; new emails in the thread will pop up in your Gmail inbox.
