If you love your Gmail Inbox clean and newsletters, notifications, mailing lists, promotions and other bulk emails labeled automatically for leisurely reading (or, well, skimming) but don't love setting up or modifying rules for each new sender and quirk, you have have Gmail put all the rules in place for you — automatically.
SmartLabels, with little setup and maintenance, can classify your mail automatically to apply labels and remove certain types of mail from the Inbox.
Have Gmail Sort Out Notifications, Mailing Lists, Promotions and More Automatically
To set up Gmail to automatically label (and optionally file) certain types of messages:
- Click the gear in the top Gmail navigation bar.
- Select Settings from the menu that comes up.
- Go to the Labs tab.
- Make sure Enable is selected for SmartLabels.
- Click Save Changes.
Now, Gmail will automatically label newsletters, promotions and other mass emails with Bulk and remove them from the Inbox automatically; messages through mailing lists and forums will be labeled Forums and remain in the Inbox; notifications (such as payment receipts or shipping statements) will also reside in the Inbox and be labeled Notifications.
You can change all these settings and keep bulk email in your Gmail Inbox, for example, or have personal emails highlighted with a special label. You can also report misclassified mail to Gmail engineers.
