Take Gmail's labels, for example. One succinct colorful tag here and there in front of an important email's subject is great, but an All Mail view is filled with huge globs of paint pushing the Subject: to the right, into oblivion, is less great and useful.
Fortunately, it's easy to remove tags from subjects in Gmail. You can still see the tags when opening the email, after all, and find all relevant emails under their labels.
