How to Undelete Emails and Restore Lost Mail in FastMail

By , About.com Guide

Once in your inbox, then in some archive folder, now — lost?

Of course nobody deleted the important message willingly, or emptied the Trash in FastMail. The important message, alas, is lost. Lost forever?

Not in FastMail. If the email has disappeared with in the last ten days or so, you can undelete and recover it along with all other deleted message by restoring a backup copy of your FastMail account. It's easy, too.

Undelete Emails and Restore Lost Mail in FastMail

To recover accidentally deleted or otherwise lost messages from a backup copy in FastMail:

  • Follow the Options link in FastMail.
  • Select Restore from Backup under Maintenance.
  • Click Restore Deleted Emails.
  • Wait for an email with the subject "Backup Restore for [your account] completed" to arrive in your FastMail inbox.
  • Click + right in front of RESTORED in the Folders list.
    • If you cannot see RESTORED, follow the (Create/Edit) link under Folders.
  • Navigate further to discover restored folders from your account. The first folder you can open should be your inbox.
  • Browse and find the message or messages you want to restore.
    • Note that you may find some duplicates in different folders if you moved messages before deleting them in FastMail. You may also find many near-identical automatically saved draft messages.
You need only pick one copy of duplicates to restore.
  • Move every message you want to restore to one of your existing folders (not under RESTORED).
All folders and messages under RESTORED will automatically be deleted after one week.
