How to View the Source of an Email Message in Evolution

By , About.com Guide

If an email makes you feel uneasy, its source may not also be the source of your disquietude. But if you want to find out why an email does not display right, or why it displays in such a beautiful way, or if you need to investigate a message's headers, a look at the source is what you need. (You can also have Evolution show all headers alongside the regular body view.)

In Evolution, peeking at the source code of an email is lacking a handy keyboard shortcut but still easy to acomplish.

View the Source of an Email Message in Evolution

To see the full source of an email in Evolution:

  • Open the email in the preview pane or in its own window.
  • Select Message | View Source from the menu.
    • Use View | Message Display | Show Email Source if the above menu item is not available (in Evolution 1.4, for instance).

This will make Evolution display the source of the current message where previously the message body could be seen. To return to the normal display, close the source window (in Evolution 1.4 and where available, select View | Message Display | Normal Display from the menu).
