List-Unsubscribe

By , About.com Guide

Definition: List-Unsubscribe is an optional email header line that specifies means to unsubscribe from a mailing list or newsletter.

A message can contain multiple means to unsubscribe: an email address, for example, and a web page.

If you do not find unsubscription instructions in a message from a mailing list, you can examine the full message source for lines starting with "List-Unsubscribe" and take appropriate action. More commonly, email services such as Windows Live Hotmail and Gmail will offer an Unsubscribe button that takes the specified action automatically.

Also Known As: List-Unsubscribe Header
Examples:
  • List-Unsubscribe:<mailto:unsubscribe-me=example.com@list.example.com?subject=Unsubscribe>: Send a message with "Unsubscribe" in the Subject: line to "unsubscribe-me=example.com@list.example.com".
  • List-Unsubscribe:<http://list.example.com/unusbscribe.php?email=me%40example.com>: Open the address "http://list.example.com/unusbscribe.php?email=me%40example.com" in a browser.
