Unsubscribe from Mailing Lists When You Go on Vacation

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com

Even when you are going on vacation, your high volume mailing lists aren't. When you come back you'll likely find your mailboxes flooded with tons of email.

You won't have the time to read all these messages, and so you will bulk delete everything. This bears two risks. On the one hand you may overlook an important message in the sheer mass of mails.

On the other hand, you may not have gotten that important mail in the first place. With your mailbox filled with messages from mailing lists, there probably was no more room for more mail, and so from a certain point on every incoming message was rejected.

To avoid this scenario, you should:

  • Unsubscribe temporarily from all but the very low volume mailing lists before you go on vacation.

On some lists, you do not have to unsubscribe completely but can put a hold on new messages while you are away from your computer and email account.
