How to Group and Read Your Feeds by Priority in Bloglines

By Heinz Tschabitscher, About.com Guide

How to Read (Almost) Everything

Do you read every item in every feed you have ever added to your Bloglines account? Joyfully? Then this is not for you — unless you are prepared spend a little less time reading each day, just as joyfully knowing that you will have captured the most important stories and that you will read most, eventually.

The key, of course, is organizing the subscriptions by priority or preference. It usually does me no good to see my catching up with the latest news I urgently want to know being interrupted by pictures from a ski resort I might visit next winter. The latter is better savored later.

Group and Read Your Feeds by Priority in Bloglines

To organize your subscriptions by urgency in Bloglines:

  • Follow the Edit link in your feeds list.
  • Click New Folder.
  • Type "Daily".
  • Click OK.
    • The "Daily" folder holds all feeds you want or need to at least skim every day.
    • Add a "Weekly" folder in the same manner for sources that can wait to be consumed at a happy later hour.
    • Think of "On Occasion" as a folder for feeds on probation.
  • Drag and drop the individual feeds to the desired folder.
  • Follow the (Finished) link.

Improve Your List as You Use It

Of course, you can add further folders to your setup — differentiate by theme inside your "Weekly" folder, for example, or add "Monthly" and "Morning" folders.

Whenever you feel a subscription in "Daily" is draining your time and energy, demote it to "Weekly" or further. Of course, promotion is possible, too!
