How to Block as Spam All Mail Not from People in Your AIM/AOL Mail Address Book

By , About.com Guide

AIM Mail's spam filter is good. It is not, alas, good enough.

Why Filter Spam Based on Content?

And why filter based on content, message paths and what not so mail from good senders ends in the Spam folder while spam of unknown origin makes it to the Inbox in the first place — if you know all the good senders?

In AIM Mail or AOL Mail, you can easily filter all mail from senders not in your Contacts to the Spam folder. While, of course, messages from your people in the address book arrive in the Inbox safely.

Block as Spam All Mail Not from People in Your AIM Mail or AOL Mail Address Book

To have AIM Mail or AOL Mail allow only mail from your address book contacts into the Inbox:

  • Follow the Settings link near AIM Mail or or AOL Mail's top right corner.
  • Go to the Spam Controls category.
  • Make sure Allow mail only from people I know is selected under Spam Filters by Address.
  • Select Off under AOL Spam Filter.
  • To be able to recover messages from new senders, select Deliver blocked mail to Spam folder under Blocked Mail.
  • Click Back to Mail.
  • Now click OK to save the new settings.

Make sure all the people from whom you want to receive are in your AIM Mail or AOL Mail contacts. Messages from new senders will go straight to the Spam folder, where you can hover the mouse over the sender and use Add Contact to make them good senders.
